I write about what matters...to you---
women, wives and moms---
about your family, faith and future.
I write about what's hard, what helps and what heals.
I show you how it's done. And not done.
I hold your hand as you find what matters to the Savior.
And let go of those things that mattered to you, but not to Him.
I write about what matters...to Him.

When Suffering Gets Personal
Recently my son posted on our family Viber these pictures.
The fires of California had reached the hill just beyond where they were.
We’ve all heard about the California fires every year.
What made the difference?
It’s knowing someone directly with that need.
Prayers went out.
Ever wonder why Alcohol Anonymous works?
They meet as a group who have gone through the same suffering before, yet made it.
Hebrews 4:15-16 says,
“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses,
but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.”
Christ suffered to help us in our pain.
Likewise, we suffer to help others.
2 Corinthians 1:4 says, “Who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.”
Early in Joey’s practice, he had many men with anxiety.
He didn’t know how to help them.
Medical science just gave a pill, that didn’t help the depression that followed.
Then another pill was given for that.
He prayed for an answer.
God allowed him to have anxiety.
A godly mentor taught him the reasons and the cause. He worked through them.
Then could help those men and women who were anxious.
Ever read those blogs from women in their 20’s with one child who tell you how to discipline children and be a good mom?
They lack depth.
They don’t have the knowledge that comes through experience, seasoned by trials.
The Bible’s says “These older women must train the younger women to love their husbands and their children.” Titus 2:4.
Maybe I qualify as one of those older women.
I write to women as we struggle to be wives and moms.
My most effective articles are those I’ve struggled to write.
I don’t like to be vulnerable. They are written out of great need.
It’s that self-sufficiency that we hang on to, under the false premise that it will get us through.
But it fails during suffering.
Why?
Because we are made to need God.
And suffering brings our need to the front of our minds.
And by our own suffering, we are to help others.
That’s how the church is supposed to work.
We suffer to help others.
Ever been in the presence of someone who has suffered greatly?
Their suffering molded them to be like Jesus.
You’d never know the suffering they’ve been through—accept for the peace that emanates from them.
They have been in the presence of Jesus—and stayed there!
Their perspective is other-worldly.
They look forward to going to be with Jesus, not to avoid more suffering or pain, but because they miss Him.
In fact, many times they are thankful for the suffering—for what it taught them, and where they are.
They are a magnet for others to share their pain.
And when others share their struggles, these suffering saints show them Jesus.
That’s what Corinthians is talking about.
That’s what Jesus started by being our high priest.
That’s what He calls us to do.

Christmas: Stories behind the Songs, part 2
It makes such a difference in our attitude when we have gone through trying times. I remember when I was a young mother at a Bible study and was rather judgmental about a young woman going through loss of income as her husband company was on strike. Why, you just trust God! Then Steve was laid up for a few months and I learned a great deal during that time! God is good to allow us to suffer and grow and love each other more. Thanks, Sonya, for sharing.
