Consider the Robin

Jesus often spoke in parables about farming and nature, because the people would know about those things.
Take a moment to consider the robin.
He has much to teach us.

Indian legends boast peace, safety and nurturing with the robin.
Others include guardians of fire (from the red-breast).
Michigan, Wisconsin and Connecticut made their state bird the robin.

No visual difference between the sexes, though their looks change slightly across the States.
Not glamorous and showy, like the blue jay, just a plain and lowly coat of dark grey, with the orange breast tucked beneath, not bright but distinctive.
Yet when that robin arrives on his migratory flight, he brings hope of spring.

His robin-blue colored eggs so often are copied at Easter.
A robin couple will  lay 2-3 broods of 3-5 eggs each year, with success rate at 25% of chicks surviving past six months.

Cannot imagine losing all but one baby every time they hatch, yet trying again, can you?

Such a serious bird. Caring for his family.
No-nonsense bird.
Steady. Dependable.

Catches up to 20 worms an hour.
Or 14 feet of earthworms per day.
But not too selective, they also eat insect larvae, grubs, caterpillars, snails, spiders, beetles, caterpillars, grasshoppers, termites, crickets with some fruits and berries added.

Why does he tilt his head?
His little head moves constantly, watching for movement beneath the ground. Depending mostly on his vision, he looks for the worm peeking out of the soil, or shifting blades of grass or dirt.
His eyes focus independently on its target, like individual monoscopes.
As a supportive sense, his hearing pinpoints the exact worm’s location.

Such a serious, busy bird, with much to do, yet God made him to sing His praise.
He comes from the thrush family, known for singing.
Who’s singing at 3:30 AM?
The robin.
The same song sings down the sun.
Such enthusiasm, cheerfulness and glory!

A lowly, humble, busy bird taking care of his family’s business, in spite of hardship, still filled with praise to his Creator.
Can we do less?

Can we do any less?

Very interesting article. I never saw a robin until we moved to the hills, was surprised that they weren't as striking as our blue birds and some of the other birds. But they are a harbinger of Spring, so that is good. And as you said, they keep singing, something I do so much of, lifts my spirits so much. Thank you Sonya
